The dreaded dip of form

Tonight the league cup returns with many sides battling it out for a place in the next round but in this article I discuss whether progressing through the cup is actually a good thing or not..?

After a strong start to the season, Brentford have lost 3-0 and 4-0 in successive defeats, making the next run of games even more important to the outcome of their season.

These next few games are vital if Brentford are to show themselves to be a solid Championship club, (See the article here) and with a humiliating defeat against Middlesbrough in which the Bees played some of their worst football in a long time. With a tough home game against Leeds coming up, the Griffin Park faithful will be praying for a win before 2 bad results manifest themselves into a potentially season crippling dip of form.

Everyone has them; for almost every football club in the world there will come a time when the form sheet reads mainly D and L. The important thing for Warburton and the team is to keep picking up points here and there to ensure the team never falls into a relegation scrap, and I know this may be hard to take, but a tight defeat at home to Fulham in the league cup (See the article here) may be the one of the better things that has happened to them in recent times.

NO matter how great a cup run may seem, it can badly compromise a teams league form, take Wigan 2 years ago as an example, they had managed to beat the drop for several seasons in a row, an historic cup run overtook league in priority, and they were relegated. So although any silverware would be greatly appreciated (but let’s be honest, not very realistic) as a newly promoted side survival has to be our main aim.

So who knows; maybe Ross McCormack’s 68th minute goal against us could come back to haunt Fulham, and not us.
