Brentford Players Analysis v Boro

After the Middlesbrough game Brentford manager Mark Warburton rather frankly stated his side’s performance was not acceptable as he saw the Bees slump to a 4-0 defeat at the Riverside stadium and fall to 14th in the Championship table. Middlesbrough were the better team all afternoon and this was duly admitted by Warburton who said, “the better team won.” Brentford simply did not turn up and were punished ruthlessly by Middlesbrough. However, Warburton did say this was uncharacteristic of his team this season.

“We’ve set good standards this season but we’ve fallen below them today and it wasn’t acceptable, especially after the break” where Brentford had quickly conceded another goal.

Warburton continued: “it’s not about letting me down; it’s about us as a team.”

So where did it all go wrong?

Here, we analyse the performances of the team:

Alan McCormack recently signed a new deal keeping him at the club till 2016 but him and his defensive colleagues could not provide any reason to celebrate as they were run over by the Middlesbrough attack and were penned in to their own half by a very effective high press from Middlesbrough, especially in the wide areas not only going forward but also making sure that Moses Odubajo and others in wide areas could not be as influential as usual as wide areas are somewhere Brentford like to exploit. This tactic also helped them neutralize the pace of our wide men.

Brentford could not maintain attacks but had a lively end to the first half eventually breaching the rigid and disciplined Middlesbrough defence when Alex Pritchard and later Jota both had shots collected by the opposing keeper or narrowly missed.

A major statistic was the superior number of shots (on target) Middlesbrough managed which was almost triple to that of Brentford contrasting the quality between the two sides on the day. Brentford only really gave Middlesbrough one moment to worry about in the game when in the second half Andre Gray got on to a Jonathan Douglas pass and fired a shot in but Dimi Konstantopoulos saved well.

On reflection Brentford definitely need to improve in this department but perhaps also in the middle of the park to strengthen the central midfield.

Let’s hope we can bounce back against Leeds with a strong performance.
