Barnsley Frustration & Disappointment

Head coach Dean Smith has said he was left deeply disappointed and hugely frustrated following the weekend’s defeat to Barnsley.

Hosting the side at Griffin Park for the match, Brentford went down two nil on the day and whilst Smith knew it wasn’t our best performance, dominating possession and having greater chances at goal – the same number as the visitors on target – Smith knew we should’ve been coming out of the match with something to show for our efforts.

Speaking to the Official Site in his post game press conference, an annoyed gaffer explained.

‘I am frustrated and disappointed because we have got a proud home record. It was a game that we could have won. We controlled the ball in the first-half without creating too many chances: Scott Hogan got in on one over the top and Maxime Colin was inches away on another one. We gave them a helping hand not defending a lump into our box, their lad has miskicked it and it has gone in. It was that sort of game today. The onus is always on us as the home team and I thought we started the game really well. We were on the front foot, had a lot of possession, but didn`t create a lot of chances. In the second-half I wanted a good start and we didn`t really get that. I thought they started the half better than we did but then we took over the game, had a number of chances but didn`t take them.’

Defeat to Barnsley also brought an end to the ten match unbeaten home run we had been on that stretched back to last season and that was also a frustration for the gaffer.

‘It felt like the Wigan game where we huffed and puffed but it just wasn`t going to be today. We have been very good here and they will probably feel that they have got away with one. There is no doubt in my mind that we were the better team. We controlled large spells of it but they have got the goals which is what counts. The performance can certainly be better, we know that. We need to work harder and we need to work quicker, and smarter. The first goal was the killer today. After that they killed time, which I don`t blame them for, and the onus is on us. They have caught us on the counter for the second.’

Now it’s all eyes to Friday’s clash against Queens Park Rangers, and Smith is looking for a return to winning ways at Loftus Road.

‘It is a big game coming up against QPR. It is a local derby and there are bragging rights up for grabs. We know how important it is for the supporters so we need to go there and make sure we put in a better performance than we did today. There is a lot of competition for that game now. We probably had a few players who were above average today but in this league you need to have more.’
