Hogan missed a chance to put Brentford ahead before Clark headed Newcastle ahead early on with Gayle doubling that lead five-minutes later.
Gayle’s second early in the second half ensured Brentford were beaten but the Bees had the final saw when Hogan did get his usual goal.
