Top Facts about Gillingham

Gillingham is twinned with two Japanese cities, Ito and Yokosuka.

Gillingham’s most famous Gillinghamite was Will Adams (believed to be the first Briton ever to reach Japan)

Adams’s story was later retold in the book ‘Shogun’, and played out on TV by Richard Chamberlain. He also has a popular 4×4 vehicle named after him.

From 2000-2005 Gillingham reached an all-time high by playing in the second tier of League Football in the UK, for 5 seasons.

In the 11th Century, Gillingham was given to Odo of Bayeux, by his brother Wiliam the conqueror.

Little good is recorded of Odo. It was recorded that his vast wealth was gained by extortion and robbery.
However due to a legal technicality, his decendants still own the town, and have the right to pillage anyone carrying a bail of hay through the town centre on a Sunday.

Paul Scally is a London-born businessman who has been the chairman of Gillingham F.C. since 1995.

Paul Scally wishes to move the club away from Gillingham.
