Brentford again put in a game of two halves as they lost at home to Swindon.
In strong wind Brentford were dire in the first half, with skipper Bennett having a particular mare, and were again two goals down before they started to play. That said, Swindon played some crisp passing football at times and showed more endeavour to go forwards than the home team.
After the break Brentford turned the tables and scored twice through a firm Cort strike and a close range Macdonald header. They had other chances too – hitting post (Wood)and bar (Saunders)and both Macdonald and Dickson missed golden chances with the goal beckoning.
However it was not to be and Swindon’s Revell stole the points (in between our goals) with a fine strike to finish off a clever counter-attack.
Other points to note : Swindon brought on a player with the physique of a pigeon, their right back got a screamer in the knackers from close range which left the whole crowd wincing, the ref twice penalised Brentford in good positions for no apparent reason late on and was generally a little cock, suprise returnee Carl Cort put in his best game to date and looked better with Mac alongside him, suprise returnee Ryan Dickson was a bit shaky to start with but it’s great to have him back, general shoddines from the ‘hilarious’ Swindon morons who kept the ball when it went into the Brook Road stand and Nikki Bull’s ill-advised decision to boot the ball back at their fans straight afterwards.
The result leaves Brentford 14th in the table
Bees – Bull, Wilson, Bennett, Phillips, Dickson, Saunders, Bean, O’Connor, Wood (Weston), Cort, Macdonald
Another poor first half although the conditions were testing. We just don’t seem to come out and attack teams from the off though.
Alan Bennett is out of form (if it had been Karleigh Osborne who had made his first half errors the poor lad would have received far more flack) although did improve in the second half. Lucky not to be taken off at half time in my book.
Good performances from Cort, Bean and Phillips which at least kept some spine in the team.
With a bit more luck we would have won today – or at least salvaged a point, but we can’t afford to keep giving away soft goals.
I also have concern that AS chose to single out Mark Phillips in the post match conference. Maybe he has been waiting for this mistake so that he is given a chance to drop Phillips and not Bennett when the former has probably been our best player so far this season
“I’m fuming. If I could rip heads off I would do. We have been beaten by a side we shouldn’t have been beaten by.”
“The third goal typified it – Mark Phillips hasn’t got a challenge in and their striker has a fee shot. The first two goals we defended too deep and for the third Mark Phillips dangles his leg out, lets him come inside and gives him a chance to shoot.”
“I wish we could start from minute one. We are a soft touch, we were not close to defending those goals”.
“I might change it for Friday (when Brentford face Hartlepool away). Our performance has got to change, we need to be harder to beat. If you are solid you win games in this league.”
